By Amazon Customer
Mauro Corona is a climber, guide, sculptor and hunter turned conservationist, who writes with passion on the way of life and the lives lost exactly 50 years ago in the Vajont disaster of 9 October 1963. His theme is that of a simple community betrayed by outsiders."The Flight of the Pine Marten" contains 26 portraits of the animals, plants and people around the village of Longarone in Northern Italy, which was swept away, together with five neighbouring hamlets, in a landslide. Nearly 2,000 people perished when the side of Mt Toc collapsed into the reservoir created by what was then Europe's tallest dam.True, the disaster merely accelerated the changes, which "marvelous progress" had already set in motion. Corona gently mocks the fad for the artificial and the labour-saving, which has brought power-saws (now the star of horror films) and sex dolls. For him it is better to make the effort to cut wood by hand and to love a real woman. His harshest criticism is reserved for those who have led the change: technicians and engineers, so full of science that they no longer appreciate the wonder and lessons of nature. He illustrates the failure to foretell the disaster with a dialogue between Mt Toc and its neighbouring Mt Borga. Feeling the waters undermining his foundations, Mt Toc appeals for help in alerting the threatened villages. He has tried with tremors and small slips but in vain. Mt Borga, (older and wiser), explains that those who built the dam are children of a gross arrogance that presumes to pit science against nature. And nature must take its course. This modern "superficial" science is juxtaposed with the country lore of Corona and the vanished woodsmen, tinkers and itinerant salesmen of his youth. The style is intimate, often slipping into local dialect, which gives it an authentic rustic feel and a naïve charm. At times, however, the simple man appears a simpleton. DNA is not inherited, he maintains, it is formed in the early days of infancy. Mercifully such moments are rare and Corona's portrayal of a lost world, which, though far from idyllic, had its own internal logic and was fundamentally just, rings true. His voice is clearest when he speaks of the individuals who died and of the wrecked community struggling to survive after the disaster - his brother who is lured away to a better life (and untimely death) in Germany; "Old Pin" searching vainly year in year out in the rubble for his dead wife's wedding ring; the boy who gets a scholarship and his sister who is accepted as an apprentice hairdresser only to have their hopes buried in the mud of Vajont. Here Corona achieves a vividness and poignancy that is unforgettable. These ghosts continue to haunt him and he includes us in the circle with him as `sorrow, on its endless carousel round the events of that dreadful day, passes and re-passes us, bringing with it the laughter of those children and the memory of their last summer'
