Bon Scott was one of the last true wildmen of rock, a working-class hero. Spanning nearly three decades Bon's career is virtually emblematic of the very emergence of Australian music, from the pin-up idol days of the sixties, through the hippy days of the early seventies to the full rock and roll attack of AC/DC.

Divided by two sides

If you want a definitive AC/DC biography do not buy or read this book. If you want to know about another side of Bon Scott's life away from AC/DC and whilst he was on the road, do buy this book. A lot of AC/DC fans have slated this because it reads as a slating of the band. Not necessarily so, I found this to be incisive and informative about Bon the person before he was in AC/DC and beyond. Ok, the band declined to be interviewed for this book, but Clinton Walker did manage to speak to a lot of people very close to Bon, former bandmates from previous bands, family, friends and girlfriends very close to him and a roadie for AC/DC whilst he was in the band. It's funny in places and obviously very moving toward the end and especially on the fateful evening when he lost his life. Bon was truly a great frontman for one of the best Rock Bands in the world, and this is a homage to Bon Scott, the man, not just the performer. Please, any more AC/DC fans who want to know more about the band, read the title of this book before you buy, it reads 'Highway to Hell: The Life and Death of "AC/DC" Legend Bon Scott'!!!! Least I say more.

If you're any sort of AC/DC fan at all I'm sure you'll know that Bon Scott was the first singer in the band. Before Brian Johnson who sings for them now. He's also the guy who most fans would most identify with, I think, although that is not to detract from Brian Johnson's efforts to front the band which are excellent also.Clinton Walker who is the writer of this book is an Australian music journalist who has been writing since the late seventies. He has done a remarkable job in this history of AC/DC by achieving an enjoyable read with obvious skill in extracting information from what appears to be the VERY close-knit world of AC/DC.Bon Scott died in London in February 1980 and this work covers AC/DC up until that time. Bon appears to have been loved by everyone who knew him. He also appears to have been a bit of a mystery too. Even after reading this one is still left with missing gaps in his story..mostly down to the whole band being slightly disfunctional owing to age differences (Bon was really a lot older than his peers...Angus Young was 17 when he started playing for AC/DC!) plus the fact that Bon was always disappearing to do his own thing often turning up only minutes before the gigs were due to start! This book certainly changed my perception of the band..I assumed they would always have been very close and very one tight unit. The reality was certainly a different case!Although a little dry at times, perhaps owing to the fact that Mr Walker is Australian and naturally a lot of the references are to Australian culture which will be alien to the average English reader, the book is definitely worth reading for a valuable insight into the hard life of a band constantly "on the road".

Insight into Bon Scott.

This is a biography on Bon Scott,but without the Angus brothers or Ac/Dc foundations approval. What you get is a insight into the legend,his upbringing,surroundings and lengthy career. It's full of peoples stories about the man and the best part of the book I found pre-Ac/Dc.Obviously his years with Ac/Dc were is main famous years most people would buy this book for. But without the bands insight into these years, the book tends to fall apart,only to redeam itself in the last three chapters maybe. Worth a read,but not great.
