In the year of the 150th anniversary of Origin of the Species, set in a town where Jane Austen was a frequent visitor, Tracy Chevalier once again shows her uncanny sense for the topical.

In the early nineteenth century, a windswept beach along the English coast brims with fossils for those with the eye…

From the moment she’s struck by lightning as a baby, it is clear Mary Anning is marked for greatness. When she uncovers unknown dinosaur fossils in the cliffs near her home, she sets the scientific world alight, challenging ideas about the world’s creation and stimulating debate over our origins. In an arena dominated by men, however, Mary is soon reduced to a serving role, facing prejudice from the academic community, vicious gossip from neighbours, and the heartbreak of forbidden love. Even nature is a threat, throwing bitter cold, storms, and landslips at her.

Luckily Mary finds an unlikely champion in prickly, intelligent Elizabeth Philpot, a middle-class spinster who is also fossil-obsessed. Their relationship strikes a delicate balance between fierce loyalty and barely suppressed envy. Despite their differences in age and background, Mary and Elizabeth discover that, in struggling for recognition, friendship is their strongest weapon.

Remarkable Creatures is Tracy Chevalier’s stunning new novel of how one woman’s gift transcends class and gender to lead to some of the most important discoveries of the nineteenth century. Above all, it is a revealing portrait of the intricate and resilient nature of female friendship.

4Historical fact-based tale with insights into women's roles in the period - another entertaining Chevalier lesson
By Momus
I'm a big fan of TC and I did enjoy this but I didn't devour it (not that I think the author intended it to be devoured) which is fine - it's one of the things I enjoy most about Chevalier's style it's best enjoyed with a slow digestion - but shortly after I finished reading it it began to fade from memory (albeit as gently as I'd digested it when I was reading) and so it didn't leave a lasting impression which I think is demanded of a 5star review. As with all Chevalier stories it's based around some historical facts - in this case, the beginnings of paleontology and the role women played in that. The story is told from alternate first person female POVs - each taking control of alternating chapters which helps with the pace and our itnerest. It's a fascinating insight not only to the development of the science but gives us a peek into women's lives at the time and the constraints surrounding them regarding of the social class - as with all of Chevalier's stories there's a lesson here.

3Readable and interesting but lacking vitality
By Eileen Pratt
This novel, despite its interesting subject matter and diligent research lacks vivacity. Like its subject matter it is somewhat fossilized and stiff. Set in Austens time it certainly isn't Austen. Perhaps because it is based on real names and events Miss Chevalier seems to be treading over carefully so as not to attribute substance to the characters which may be untrue. I think she could have taken a greater flight of fancy.Nevertheless, it is worth a read and I enjoyed it - though not as much as her other novels.

5Highly recommended
By Fengirl
Oh yes! Great book which has got Tracy Chevalier a new reader. The author must spend years researching, honing, refining. The mental pictures painted are so enveloping that you actually feel cold, scared, anxious etc. The remarkable creatures don't have made up names, they are (or were) real, the discoveries real, some of the people real - yet the book reads as a comfortable novel
