2The Real Essence of The Message of Fatima
By EDMUND J. GRANT
The author of the original Italian language version of this publication is Italian media personality and investigative reporter, Mr. Antonio Socci. He has a reputation as a talented writer with a rhetorically pleasing style, but his fixation on a theoretical premise of a deliberately concealed Fatima secret and other related issues as shown in this work, has sadly been an exercise of significant conjecture and overreach on this most important subject. It has unfortunately also been a divisive development for many of the faithful of the Catholic Church.Mr. Socci presents here a series of fairly detailed but generally incohesive hypotheses, related to the previously secret messages originating with Our Lady of Fatima's apparition events in 1917. These theories are organized in a typically disjointed journalistic style, one that presents a real challenge for an alert reader to follow any convincing logical progression. In addition, there are many unsubstantiated moving targets created by the author in this work, that drop away from discussion as the story moves along, but will then deceptively reappear later in the text disguised as established facts. This convoluted technique can be attractive as an entertaining format for a quick moving novel or TV drama script, however this volume is sadly NOT a product of a professional investigative effort, in my humble opinion. In THE FOURTH SECRET OF FATIMA, the author primarily attempts to prove his strongly held postulation that there continues to exist a hidden, though very significant and explosive portion of the well known "Third Secret of Fatima," that he is convinced has been purposely kept undisclosed by the Catholic church authorities. The second major part of Mr. Socci's postulations is his position that Our Lady's request for the Consecration of Russia to her Immaculate Heart, still remains to be validly performed to this very day, to the Holy Mother's satisfaction. More on this element follows later below. But first, to start with some background...this well-known "Third Secret" message was one of many reportedly received during the Holy Virgin Mary's apparitions to three young Portuguese children, including Lucia dos Santos, that occurred on six different occasions from May 13th to October 13th of 1917. Mr. Socci rhetorically refers to his notion of an unsubstantiated missing component of this message as "THE FOURTH SECRET OF FATIMA."The original "Third Secret" message was actually recorded by the then sole living visionary Sister Lucia de Jesus dos Santos, in January of 1944, at her superior's request. The original Portuguese document is currently being held in the Vatican archives, and its contents were finally released by senior Vatican officials in the year 2000, on the order of Pope John Paul II. A reproduction of this controversial handwritten paper can be found on the Vatican website under the keyword of "The Message of Fatima."Moving along into the details of the book under review...Mr. Socci also implies that his postulation of this missing portion of the message, is still being deliberately withheld by the Vatican leadership, and has been kept secret with the Church's full knowledge of its existence for decades. Moreover, the author posits that the veiled portion's still cloaked and almost certainly horrific content contains additional words of the Virgin Mary that speak of a warning(s) of a future unspeakable event(s), that might possibly include a great general apostasy in the Catholic Church. He also strongly speculates that the related catastrophic event(s) would be even much more calamitous than the events described in the words of Sister Lucia's "Third Secret," published in the year 2000, (as if this troubling content wasn't frightful enough). The above foundational positions of the author are in sync with the overall structure of this product, which is heavily speculative, sensational and employs a significant amount of tortured parsing. Obviously, this seasoned reporter's overwrought product has been designed to attract a large, legitimately curious readership, but more especially to appeal to those who would be naturally drawn to the genre of a Vatican-based grand conspiratorial effort.Additionally, Mr. Socci strongly maintains that the world at large has a perfect right to a full revelation of this so-called concealed portion of the secret. He also suggests that this lack of a full exposure is continuing to frustrate the Virgin Mother's very own wishes and instructions. These are very presumptuous positions indeed, that can easily result from making precipitous leaps from admitted hypotheses to confident statements of certainty on his conclusions, and then handling them as proven facts later within the very same publication. This is obviously a very clever although risky stance indeed, for theories that are so speculatively argued, and are without the benefit of any conclusive documentary evidence that I could find in this work. Most importantly, the ultimately weak position of these speculations of Mr. Socci becomes apparent by the fact that in the final analysis, he produces NO "SMOKING GUN" evidence for his so-called missing FOURTH SECRET!Conversely, in a significant rebuttal to this "missing secret" theory, the well-known seer of the 1917 apparitions, Sister Lucia de Jesus dos Santos, had reportedly disputed this controversial scenario by saying... "everything has been published; there are no more secrets." (1) This clinching, definitive statement of Sister's was found to be a very newsworthy and significant declaration from her in 2001, one that has never been revised to my knowledge. As mentioned earlier, Mr. Socci also strongly denies that Our Lady's request for the Consecration of Russia to her Immaculate Heart was ever performed validly, i.e. one that was done to the satisfaction of the Holy Mother Mary. He particularly refers to the Consecration performed by the late Pope John Paul II in 1984, but he also includes any Consecration of Russia performed by anyone else before or since. As a result, the author's logic system apparently assumes that this request by the Holy Mother would thus remain to this very day as a mandatory and as yet unfulfilled requirement for the anticipated deliverance of the Holy Virgin Mary's promises. However, as a strong refutation also to this speculative position, Sister Lucia de Jesus had reportedly maintained long before her passing in 2005, that the "Consecration of 1984" by Pope John Paul II "...was accepted by Heaven. `Yes, it was done as Our Lady requested.'" (2) This statement by none other than the primary apparition witness herself, attests to the fact that this papal action of 1984 was indeed a completed fulfillment of the Holy Virgin Mary's reportedly ardent appeal that Russia be consecrated to her Immaculate Heart. This statement of the kind Sister stands alone as an obviously direct and fatal contradiction to one of the two main postulations of this treatise of Mr. Socci's.According to the reported request of the Virgin Mary, a primary reason for her entreaty for a Consecration of Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary was to prevent her (atheistic Russia) from spreading her errors throughout the world, and causing wars and persecutions of the Church. (3) As a strong indicator of the validity of this 1984 Papal action of Consecration, we are all familiar with the history of the unexpected collapse of the severe dictatorship of the (former) Soviet Union, that began in the months and years that shortly followed the "Consecration of 1984."Perhaps the most stunning event to occur in the Soviet Union directly after the 1984 Consecration, was the massive, crippling explosion that occurred at the important Soviet Naval Base of Severomorsk, near Murmansk. Hundreds were reported killed along with the destruction of two/thirds of the missile ordnance stockpiled there. Britain's Jane's Defence Weekly reported on July 10, 1984 ...''The destruction represents the greatest disaster to occur in the Soviet Navy since World War II...'' Most noteworthy was that the severely destructive catastrophe occurred on May 13, 1984, within just two months of the March 25, 1984 Consecration, which of all dates just happens to also be the anniversary date of the first Fatima apparition in 1917 and the feast day in the Catholic Church of "Our Lady of Fatima." Just a coincidence??Russia's President of that time was reported by the BBC in April 2005, to have said that ...the collapse of the Soviet Union was "the greatest geopolitical catastrophe" of the 20th century, one that had left tens of millions of Russians outside of the Russian Federation. History shows us that this same widespread collapse resulted in the rapid freedom of several nations that had been effectively held captive for decades, where the freedom to practice any religious faith had been intentionally, severely restricted by the godless, contemporary communist authorities.Of course many problems still exist in the nation of Russia of today, but Sister Lucia's position on this subject taken from interviews was that the major upheaval and restructuring of that country which occurred in the late 20th century, actually did reflect the promised, positive result of Our Lady's requested Consecration, one that was finally performed with Heaven's approval by Pope John Paul II in 1984.Another significant impediment that I perceive for Mr. Socci's major premises above to hold any reasonable hope of legitimacy, is the almost certain need for there to have been a continually successful, massive conspiracy of literally dozens of unexpectedly mendacious, hypocritical people, going back over many decades The participants would have had to include many Popes, Bishops and priests, joined by the surviving Fatima seer herself, Sister Lucia dos Santos, along with her religious superiors. Therefore, I submit that the preceding problematical scenarios of Mr. Socci are well beyond any reasonable consideration of possibly having been based on fact.Continuing along...as an experienced researcher with significant documentation of the Fatima apparition issues available to me, I have done a careful study of several of Mr. Socci's statements that form the basis for these sometimes interesting, but inconclusive and misleading hypotheses in this matter. The majority of this author's work is formed of mainly circumstantially thin purported statements or events, assumptive interpretations and biased impressions that are stitched together with the weak thread of a speculative logic. This method employs phrases of conjecture throughout such as..."most probably," "it appears to be," "one is led to believe" and others similar. These speculations are then often merged and amalgamated with other thoughts and impressions with the results being eventually treated as established facts, in later statements of the same text. This amorphous logic structure results conclusively in a fatal lack of a compelling case for the author's theories, in my view. Consequently, I remain unmoved and I fail to accept the basic validity of Mr. Socci's weak, primary hypotheses in this matter. There are far too many thinly stretched speculations and anecdotes, to begin to try to properly untangle and individually analyze here in the limited space available for this particular review. Also, during this research effort I have found several instances where the primary essence of Mr. Socci's premises are sufficiently and succinctly contradicted by the known historical record. This applies most significantly to the documented letters, recorded statements and well-known memoirs of the Fatima apparitions' primary witness, Sister Lucia de Jesus dos Santos. This fact taken alone should be more than sufficient to effectively discredit the integrity and veracity of the main principles of this text. (There are also other corroborating statements of Sister Lucia and others found in Cardinal Bertone's book, THE LAST SECRET OF FATIMA and in the work of the Coimbra Prioress Sister Celina's OUR MEMORIES OF SISTER LUCIA).Other statements of Mr. Socci's are otherwise literally true as written, but when they are used outside of their fuller historical context, they result in a distorted and effectively sophistic set of arguments, in my view. However, during this process the author does present many interesting facts related to the Fatima events that do serve to stimulate interest in this very important subject, for today's readers.Of course, in the final analysis each reader will have to decide for himself or herself as to the feasibility of such utterly implausible propositions. However, in any case one thing is for certain...Mr. Socci has presented no incontrovertible, "SMOKING GUN" evidence to prove these theoretical scenarios of either his hidden "Fatima Secret bombshell", or of his "failed Consecration of Russia" theory, in this publication under review. It is also worth noting in passing, that there are still many unanswered or imprecisely answered questions involving the issue of certain Vatican officials' historic handling of this "Third Secret" matter. But in the final analysis, if the full truth were known on these issues they may not necessarily have any real probative value for the arguments of the author. It could be argued that some crisper and more illuminating statements from the Vatican authorities throughout this period would have helped to dampen a lot of the ongoing speculation that is continuing to provide grist for the mill, right up to the present day.But it also could be argued that historically speaking, the attention seeking, conspiratorial theorists such as the "Fatimists," are seldom satisfied with any answers given. In fact, answers so provided sometimes do nothing more than to provide additional material to be finely scrutinized and criticized, and to further fuel the controversy. However, I for one would also welcome the day when the full truth of these nebulous and confusing peripheral questions is fully understood. For my own part, my personal position on the general subject of all of these well known events and messages of Fatima, is that...I continue to place my full trust and confidence in the pertinent statements of our two most recent Marian oriented Popes, on these matters. These include first, the writings of the deceased Holy Father Pope John Paul II (soon to be beatified) and secondly, the words of our present Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI. The former Cardinal Ratzinger's "Theological Commentary...," that is a critical part of the Vatican document "The Message of Fatima," is a masterful text in my opinion, and is the best that I have read on this subject to date. It is currently available on the www.vatican.va website under The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.During discussions of the author's "concealed message" argument, I am often reminded of the reported words of the Carmelite superior Sister Maria Celina, Prioress of Sister Lucia's Coimbra, Portugal convent. She stated that Sister Lucia de Jesus, the primary seer and reporting witness to these Fatima events and messages, had some sad reflections on the unremitting quests for the "Third Secret" message contents, prior to its official release on June 26, 2000. The superior has also said that all of this speculation about the secret was upsetting to the seer. Significantly, Sister Lucia is reported to have said the following ..."If they would just devote their energy to living out the real essence of the message, which has already been revealed...." (4), (5).After the "Third Secret" had been revealed to the world in the year 2000, Sister Celina also reveals in her biography of Sister Lucia, the response that she received from the visionary after telling her that..."people are saying that there is yet another secret! Lucia replied: `If they know that there is another secret, let them reveal it! I know of no other! Some people are never satisfied. Take no notice!'" (4), (5). I personally believe that these reported words of Sister Lucia are in fact a reality, and I completely agree with these words of the kind Sister, and I join with her in these sentiments. So then, after all of the many diversionary discussions relating to these "Third Secret," "Fourth Secret," "hidden message," "cataclysmic predictions," and "Vatican conspiracy" issues, what in fact truly is the incontrovertible meaning of Sister Lucia's de Jesus' phrase "...the real essence of the message, which has already been revealed"?It is simply the heavenly Mother's plea for repentance, our individual conversions, while emphasizing the need for prayer and penance. This petition is fundamentally accompanied by a continuing appeal for an increased devotion to "The Immaculate Heart of Mary," alongside of and united to that of her Beloved Son as "The Sacred Heart of Jesus"; this prayerful observance is familiar to many as "the Devotion to the Two Hearts."Therefore, I respectfully submit and firmly believe that all those who heed and stay faithful to these heavenly appeals of the Blessed Virgin Mother, that are in essence supported by and emanating from her own Divine and Beloved Son, will at the day of their final reckoning find themselves in very good spiritual stead indeed. However, this is notwithstanding the ever-present possibility that while still in this earthly life, many of us may unfortunately have to experience a possibly apocalyptic or cataclysmic event(s), whether it would be something related to the Fatima messages or not.Nevertheless, it is necessary to consider that as utterly horrific as such an event(s) could truly be, it is incumbent on us all to retain as a priority an assurance that such a frightful scenario would still pale and be of fundamentally little consequence, when stacked up against what is at stake for each of us, when we finally and permanently "penetrate the veil." Our faith teaches us that our own individual eternal outcomes will then be delivered up at this time of the "particular judgment" (i.e. salvation or NOT). Our faith likewise tells us that our souls will then begin to experience our newly mandated, irreversible destinies "on the other side," as we transcend into and become part of the unimaginable immensity of never-ending time, that is a major component of the eternal situation that we will all find ourselves in, at the end of our days.In closing, perhaps this difficulty of maintaining a proper "focus on the eternity" as described above, was either sensed by or a heavenly inspiration was received by the youngest Fatima visionary Jacinta, who is reported to have remarked the following shortly before her death at the tender age of nine years:"Oh!...If men only knew what eternity is, how they would make all possible efforts to amend their lives...."I think it is well that we all should remember and embrace these profound, insightful words of the former shepherd child who is now "Blessed" Jacinta, a potential little Saint! Her statement illustrates that we must at all costs avoid living the rest of our lives in a fashion that may put one's individual soul's salvation in jeopardy.(1) ZENIT News - VATICAN CITY, DEC. 20, 2001 "No More Mysteries in Fatima Secret, Sister Lucia Says."(2) FATIMA, IN LUCIA'S OWN WORDS by Fr.
