3Welcome to the multiverse
By Jeremy Allan-Smith
My second Crichton caper, after JURASSIC PARK, with my wormhole connections straining to the limits of credibility. The explanations of quantum leaps and orthogonal multiverse coordinate change find a neat and accessible slot at the start of the story but from then on, beware! Flaming heads, freshly decapitated, lovelorn axe-wielding green giants, just-in-nick-of-time rescues from evil executioners and psychotic medieval warlords, it's all just what you need to take the pain away from Theresa May on election day. The narrative gathers momentum unrelentingly, while the earlier characters in the book, the doctors, James Wauneka and Beverley Tsotsie, who could have 'humanised' some of the preposterous events of the novel, are given redundancy notices earlier on, whilst the inevitable villain of the piece, Doniger, is too remorselessly nasty to sustain much interest. I preferred the dinos in the Park.

3It stretched my imagination well past the believable.
By Chris C.
When I read other reviews about this book I wasn't sure whether I would like it or not. However, I always rated Michael Crichton as an author, so I went ahead and ordered it.I am on the fence. It's not badly written, but even when I stretch my imagination and incredulity as far as I can, I still can't believe just how many things can possibly go wrong for this bunch of people who transport themselves back in time. I didn't want to stop reading it because I wanted to know what happened at the end, but I so wanted it to end.I found the part where the characters were being introduced fairly boring, and after they went back in time, I found it unbelievable; not that they could go back, but the way everything transpired against them, every step of the way, in an attempt to prevent them from doing what they needed to do.I would recommend it to anyone who loves the books that Michael Crichton writes, but I preferred Jurassic Park.

4Enjoyable but mindless romp
By Darth Spaniel
First of all, forget the dreadful film as no book could be that bad. This is an enjoyable but somewhat daft yarn that has also the usual Crichton elements of scientific hokum, goodies, baddies and a race against time. This time there are no dinosaurs or robots gone mad, but time travelling scientists out of their depth in medieval France. It's a clever combination of innocent abroad, historical romp and techno thriller and has the usual cast of 2D characters we expect from (and forgive) Michael Crichton. This is not a history lesson and it should not be taken as a realistic portrayal of life and conflict between the dastradly English and the noble French. It is, however, an entertaining no-brainer that is ideal fodder for long flights and holidays or when you're in need of a light-weight, enjoyable thriller that will allow your brain to coast along. Great fun but not great history.
