I found this book very difficult to get into and almost gave up after not being able to move past first 100 pages in over one week, but it did improve and became easier to read. It is definitely better than the first two of the Harry Hole thrillers but a good deal of suspension of disbelief is still required. A fairly unrealistic plot spoils the enjoyment. Too many subplots, some of them do not resolve in a story, though they might be resolved in future books of the series. Police is generally shown as not very competent, supposedly brilliant police woman while realising that she uncovered the identity of a dangerous criminal doesn't realise that her life is now in grave danger and main protagonist is shown as someone who puts his personal sympathies above his public duties, moreover his superiors seem willing to play along and ignore interests of innocent victims. I can buy that they can avoid disclosing a prevented assassination attempt if the perpetrator is dead, but would they sweep under the table 4 previous related murders/assassinations? Is it really considerate to the murderer's next of kin not to inform them what their parent got up to or plainly irresponsible considering that he was most likely suffering from a serious mental disorder? I also don't like the way Nesbo takes liberty with certain facts and tries to change them to fit his chosen story line. There is no death penalty in South Africa, so if he says that there is then he can just as well give his protagonist some superman powers. Overall, it wasn't a very bad read compared to his first two books, but it doesn't merit the accolade Nesbo's series apparently received. I won't be in a rush to read another Harry Hole story or anything by Jo Nesbo.

Only my second Harry Hole book, read out of sequence to date but this one convinces me to go back to start and work through in order. A good twisting storyline.

This book was the first Jo Nesbo that I read and it won't be the last. The story is interesting and told in a way that is quite gripping.
