TO LAUGH OR TO CRY?

GP Katie Carr contemplates divorcing the permanent sneer that is husband David - the bile that fills his weekly newspaper column unacceptable at home.Suddenly he becomes insufferably saintly. A brain tumour? Not so! The cause is healer D.J. GoodNews, whom he invites to stay. At once they resolve to improve the world around them - for starters, half the children's possessions diverted to the deprived, neighbours exorted to allow the homeless into their spare rooms....Katie preferred it when hatred was the currency. At least she knew where she was. Now everything seems surreal. In an attempt to understand, she even goes to church - bemused by a sparse congregation mainly of ancients and a female preacher singing "Getting to know you" from the pulpit. There is doubt about it. She is in an alien world and out of her depth.So here is more dark humour from Nick Hornby, another central character striving to cling to the wreckage that life now represents. Funny or sad? Parts amused but, on the whole, I found this an uncomfortable read.

I Didn't Think Much Of It.

I didn't think much of this book and found it distinctly average. It got some good reviews in the press but I think that must have been a little bit of comradeship, as it was light and trifling. Nick Hornby is obviously quite a nice guy but it doesn't translate into a mass-media paperback.
