What a great "entrance" Sharpe makes - even though it wasn't the first book written it is the first one on chronological order of eventsAll the Cornwall trademarks of great writing, spot on research and descriptions are there. I thoroughly enjoyed it and the story line forms part of what appeared on TV as the final two Sharpe's set in IndiaLove teh TV series but the books are much better with so much detail and character in there

This is a gripping story of derring do, educative about the brutality of life in the 18th century British Army, the human weaknesses of those in command, and the tiger obsessed Tippo of Mysore. Much is made of Private Sharpe's cruel flogging which precedes most of the action, though we may doubt the assertion that such sentences often meant death for the victims. Saved from this fate only by fortunate intervention, the hero reveals himself to be the 007 of his day, through miraculous survival through ever more daring exploits that would be stirring stuff for a boys' adventure book, but which increasingly challenge adult credulity. The emotional exchanges which gather momentum during the closing chapters also seem rather unlikely. However these weaknesses do not seriously detract from the merits of this semi-fictional yarn which was hard for this reviewer to put down.
